artist’s statement of the flag4peace®
Modern symbolism is represented here on behalf of an ancient idea of the perfect
condition:
It is the artist’s intention to create a perpetual expression to avoid the short lived
impact.
It is not enough just to write or to placard this idea.
It is much more necessary by underground movement to clarify this moment of
briefness. This is where the idea of choosing the flag as a surface of artistic creation
instead of the image comes into place.
The fabric flaps in the wind, the letters are moving, sometimes they are visible and
sometimes not.
Simultaneously the flag has been a carrier for information and symbol since time immemorial. The white flag in particular stands for peacefulness, taking distance from violence, the end, a task but also for purity.
Peace is an international border crossing wish, a basic need of mankind. This is represented by using the word peace in many languages on the flag. This in a sense somehow wild and accidentally mixed convolution of single words symbolises this plurality in unity.
The letters of the words are chosen to be black, because black in itself is no colour
but a condition, - which is the absence of light. Therefore it is clearer that ‘peace’
comes from the inner light – the soul.
Black on White – this is the strongest contrast, to represent a situation.
‘Relativism’ – is not possible here.
The font size is consciously chosen to be small, not only to make the viewer look
more closely, but the individual contribution is always small, the aim / principle
‘peace’ is the main issue.
The front side of the flag only shows the words, the backside of the small flags, communicates in blue writing the chosen languages used. Everything has two sides.’ Peace’ no matter how it is turned always results in the same. The comprehension only comes with a second glance. This is confirmed by the language definition on the second side.
The centre here is the sign language. For one because of its internationality and for the other because the result of violence – in opposite to peace – is always violation and disability. Therefore it is more important that the expression of peace is used in the language of the injured/disabled person.
Languages of all times (hieroglyphics, runes, celtic symbols) are grouped around the edges. Towards the middle it becomes more modern. This explains the circumstance that history is the backdrop for the present.
The mixture of the words in general acknowledges the circumstance tribute that every person views the conditions of the world with his/her own eyes and that peace at the end cannot be logical.
As mentioned before the flag is an old known communication tool. It embodies the idea of the dialogue, whereas peace can only develop through communicative togetherness. It has to be lived and always in motion.
This body of work should animate the viewer, regardless of background, language, education and culture, to treat each other openly and without any reservation.
„The encounter between people is what makes live worth living“
